This is the Eliot park. It's pretty fun, especially the big bowl. I like the way they built a drop into the street area... Free, no pads, dawn to dusk. Get some!

The daily grind — Skaters flock to new park

STAMFORD— The opening of the Scalzi Skate Park has skateboarders from across the East Coast flocking to Stamford.

A soft opening last Thursday, attracted skaters from Brooklyn, NY, Philadelphia, PA and all around Connecticut to join with a core group of Stamford skaters at the 100 Bridge St. park.

The park features interconnected round cement bowls, resembling empty in-ground pools, as well as boxes, stairs and rails for street style skating. It attracts all skill levels and disciplines, as some areas like a narrow 180-degree, hot tub-size bowl require high levels of skill to navigate.

Work rolls along at new skate park

STAMFORD - Construction of the city's first skate park is under way in Scalzi Park.

Workers are pouring concrete to form a 10,000-square-foot curved bowl that will allow skate boarders and inline skaters to pick up momentum as they roll from one obstacle to the next.

The park will be free and open to the public when it opens at the end of the month.

The city hired Grindline Skateparks of Seattle, which has worked on more than 80 such parks worldwide, to design and build the bowl.

Skate park oversight proves difficult

SEYMOUR — Managing the town's skate park is becoming a headache for officials.

Last summer, a succession of supervisors hired to staff the park left the job, and the Recreation Department scrambled to find replacements. By the end of the season in the fall, the park was often closed. And when it was open, according to some officials, some skateboarders were not wearing helmets and breaking other rules.

"I drove by it a few times and saw that it was chaos," Corporation Counsel George Temple said at a recent Recreation Commission meeting. "I think the idea is a good idea. It offers a recreational opportunity to kids who might not get recreation. But anarchy cannot prevail, and that's what we have."

Concrete conundrum: Why does Colorado have some of the best public skate parks in the nation?

Faced with the 15,000 square feet of sprawling, bulbous concrete in a dusty working-class town like Trinidad, awestruck skateboarders ponder different versions of the same question: What's a skate park like you doing in a place like this?

This isn't the only small town where skaters are asking themselves this question. Locales as unlikely as Cañon City, La Junta and Crested Butte have birthed some of the best skate parks this side of Denver...
